1 Lagos State University (LASU) Alumni UK Scholarship for Undergraduate Students 2023

The Alumni Association UK Branch of Lagos State University has received approval from the university’s Senate for the introduction of the “Lagos State University UK Scholarship Programme.” This initiative is designed to assist 50 students by covering their tuition fees, aligning with the university’s 5th strategic goal of improving student welfare.

In an effort to give back to their alma mater and contribute to the institution’s objectives, the Lagos State University Alumni Association, UK branch, has launched a scholarship scheme. The announcement of this initiative was made during the 300th Statutory Meeting of the Lagos State University Senate on July 27, 2023. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, presented this significant undertaking.

Lagos State University, commonly referred to as LASU, is situated in Ojo, with additional campuses located in Ikeja and Epe, both towns within Lagos State, Nigeria.

The establishment of the University took place during the tenure of the late Lateef Kayode Jakande. The institution provides a range of academic offerings, including diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs, including an MBA program. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2020, LASU achieved recognition by being ranked among the top 600 universities globally. Notably, on June 23, 2021, LASU achieved the distinction of being the best young university in Nigeria, considering its age of less than 50 years.

Termed as the “Lagos State University UK Scholarship Programme,” its key objectives encompass:

Supporting Students in Need: Offering assistance to fifty chosen students grappling with financial constraints in covering their tuition fees.

Alleviating Financial Pressures: Mitigating the economic challenges encountered by students who struggle to meet their educational costs.

This initiative harmonizes with the Vice-Chancellor’s fifth strategic objective, centered on enhancing student well-being.

Alumni Contribution: A gesture from the Alumni Association to make a positive contribution to their revered institution.

Qualification Criteria for LASU Undergraduate Scholarship

For individuals interested in pursuing this opportunity, the prerequisites for eligibility are outlined below:

  1. Enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at LASU.
  2. Positioned within the third semester of year one, progressing to second year through fifth year of study.
  3. Successful completion of all components of the current academic year.
  4. Maintenance of a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5, assessed through:
    • Academic transcript evaluation.
    • Acknowledgment of scholarly achievements.
  5. Exemplary conduct with no history of disciplinary actions.
  6. Demonstrated financial need through:
    • Financial information provided in the application.
    • Content outlined in the letter of recommendation.
    • Detailed explanation provided in the essay.
  7. Absence of direct familial relationship with any current employee or trustee of LASU.

2 NNPC / SPDC / Total Energies / NAOC JV University Scholarship Award Scheme for Undergraduate Students

Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) operates within the land and swamp regions of the Niger Delta through a joint venture arrangement involving NNPC (60%), NAOC (20%), and Oando (20%). The concessions are situated in Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, and Rivers States. Additionally, NAOC possesses a 5% participating interest in the SPDC JV alongside NNPC (55%), The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) (30%), and Total E&P Nigeria (TEPNG) (10%), where SPDC serves as the operational lead for the joint venture.

Throughout its history, NAOC, in collaboration with its joint venture partners, has actively contributed to advancing the socio-economic well-being of communities within the Niger Delta region. This collaboration extends to working closely with local authorities. The company is firmly committed to cultivating positive relationships and facilitating constructive dialogues with more than 330 communities. This approach involves identifying the communities’ needs, aspirations, and concerns and subsequently devising effective strategies to address them.

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (Operator of the NNPC/SPDC/TEPNG/AGIP Joint Venture) is dedicated to its Social Investment initiative in Education. This program is designed to foster academic excellence and enhance the employability of young Nigerians. Qualified Nigerian students who have been admitted into full-time academic studies for the 2021/2022 session are invited to apply for the University Scholarship Scheme.

This scholarship, based on merit, is offered in two categories:

  • the National Merit Award (NM) and
  • the Areas of Operation Merit Award.
  1. National Merit Award (NM) – Open to all Nigerian students.
  2. Areas of Operation Merit Award – Open to Nigerian students who are natives of SPDC’s operational regions in Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, and Rivers States.

NAOC Undergraduate Scholarship Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for the NAOC Undergraduate Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Citizenship: Must be citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
  2. Enrollment: Must be registered as FULL-TIME undergraduates in an accredited and approved university in Nigeria.
  3. Academic Level: Must be in 200 Level or possess verifiable proof of admission into an undergraduate program for the 2021/2022 academic session.
  4. Scholarship Status: Must not be a beneficiary of any other scholarship provided by an entity within the Oil and Gas Industry, whether at the national or international level.

Important Notes:

  • SPDC-JV does not request payment from applicants. The application process is completely free of charge.
  • SPDC-JV does not appoint ‘Representatives’ or ‘Agents’ to facilitate the application process.
  • The application period is from July 26, 2023, to August 23, 2023.
  • Only shortlisted candidates will receive invitations for the proctored computer-based test.
  • Communication will only be directed to successful candidates at each stage of the selection process.
  • Applications must be submitted solely through the Shell Nigeria website.
