The University of Cambridge Stormzy Scholarship has been providing vital financial support to 32 UK Black students, empowering them to make the most of their University journey. Initially starting with two students annually, the program expanded in 2021. In partnership with HSBC UK, Stormzy’s #Merky Foundation will offer scholarships to at least 10 Black students commencing their studies in autumn 2023.

Scholarship Details

Since its establishment in 2018, the Stormzy Scholarship has transformed the lives of 32 UK Black students by offering crucial financial aid. Originally providing support to two students annually, the program expanded in 2021. In partnership with HSBC UK, Stormzy’s #Merky Foundation aims to assist at least 10 Black students beginning their studies in autumn 2023.

Over the past three years, more than 400 UK Black students have joined the University of Cambridge. Despite these achievements, further efforts are necessary to ensure that UK Black students not only apply but feel welcomed and achieve their full potential at the University.

Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the Stormzy Scholarship, applicants must:

• Belong to one of the following ethnic categories:
  • Black African
  • Black Caribbean
  • Black Other
  • Mixed – White and Black Caribbean
  • Mixed – White and Black African
  • Other mixed background (including Black African, Black Caribbean, or Black Other)
• Hold a confirmed place for entry to the University of Cambridge for their first undergraduate degree, with studies commencing in October 2023. (Applicants can check their offer status on UCAS Hub.)
• Be a UK student and have been assessed for fee status as ‘home.’ The fee status should be stated in the offer letter issued earlier. In case of doubt, please contact the Cambridge College that has offered the place.
• Have applied to Student Finance (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland) for a tuition fee loan and maintenance loan and received confirmation of assessment and financial support. An income assessment must have been conducted and consent given to share the information with the University. Please note that if awarded a Stormzy Scholarship, recipients can reduce their loan amount to zero, but an income assessment from Student Finance is still necessary to receive the Cambridge Bursary.

Scholarship Duration and Reward

The scholarships are non-repayable and will cover the full cost of tuition fees, providing a maintenance grant that significantly reduces the need for recipients to take out government or commercial loans. This support will be available for the three or four years of their undergraduate course. For the year 2023-24, each student will receive a total award worth £20,000. Receiving this award will not affect eligibility for a Cambridge Bursary.

To apply for the Stormzy Scholarship, complete the online application by 3 September 2023 (11.59 pm). The application form for 2023 will be available here from 17 August.
